2020 Bull Sale Notes:

All Highview Angus Ranch Sale Bulls have passed a full semen test & were again, vaccinated with PregGuard 10 FP MLV, 8-Way Clostridial, Immvac Beef & given MultiMin this past year.

Complete A.I. breeding, ET, Genomic Testing, developing and culling all take a big investment. Yet our bulls remain competitively priced & represent an excellent value! We think you will be surprised just how affordable they are. Just ask for a current price list!

For comparison Registered Angus Bulls (as reported to the AAA YTD in fiscal 2019 through March) 11,381 head averaged $5,438. 3,500 head in the Pacific Northwest Averaged $4,180 while Angus Bulls sales here in Oregon averaged $4,251.

The average for even the top end of our bulls selling this season are priced significantly less than the average for Angus bulls sold across the US and around our Region even though our bulls are all A.I. sired with deep A.I. pedigrees.

Buy the best bulls you can, but remember in times like these, every dollar counts!

Additionally, all have been genomically tested to verify pedigrees and enhance accuracy of their data by Angus GS the most comprehensive and only breed specific DNA test available in the world today.

Genomic Testing and GE-EPD’s Genomic testing had greatly improved in the last 10 years. This past year Angus has gone to a whole new level with Angus GS and the new “One Step” platform. Angus GS is the only beef breed specific test in the world today. Hundreds of thousands of Angus animals are now represented in the genomic data base for comparison to actual performance and data measurements. Perhaps the greatest enhancement is that One Step recalibrates weekly rather than about every 18 months prior. Data can be added across the breed and not only does it verify the parentage it compares an animal’s truer actual relationships rather than standard pedigree estimates that had been used calculating EPD’s since their inception.

The higher the representation of a pedigree within the training data, the more the connection, and the more reliability genomic testing provides. Verifying parentage has also greatly improved the data set as well. Genomics further underscores the advantage of using 100% A.I. sires in pedigrees that are nationally known and compared by Highview Angus Ranch. Simply put Genomic testing with Angus GS means an even higher level of confidence in predicting what an animal might pass along to their progeny with by far more accurate & updated EPD’s than has ever before been available. Not only all our of sale bulls but now all our females have all been genomically profiled as well. This has been a very significant investment. Highview Angus Ranch will continue to provide our customers with the most up to date information available in the industry today.

A note regarding genetic recessives.  Once the mapping of the entire bovine genome was completed a few years ago, identifying & subsequent testing for several genetic recessives has become more readily available in many breeds. While Angus has received the most attention due to the shear size of the data base, nearly all major breeds have identified some & the openness of their approach has varied by breed as well as breeder.  Highview Angus Ranch has been very aggressive & open in our approach to genetic defects. With considerable effort & expense the entire Registered Cow Herd & any cattle offered for sale by Highview Angus Ranch are free by pedigree or DNA test of AM, NH,  CA, M1, D2 and now OS. We did this as soon as the status & subsequent tests became available & have not wavered in our pursuit to offer problem free cattle. Unfortunately, not all Seed-Stock Suppliers share our view.

The recessive status & most recent EPD’s of any Registered Angus can be simply checked at www.Angus.org by putting in the Registration number in the “Animal Search Box” located in the upper left hand corner of the home page.  If tested themselves cattle will have a designation of either F (free) ie AMF, NHF, CAF, M1F, D2F, OSF or C (carrier) with such designations as AMC, NHC, CAC, M1C, D2C, or OSC after or just under their Registration number. If they are untested and have no potential by pedigree, there will be no designation or listing of such. Rest assured that all Highview Angus Ranch bulls sold after these recessives (AM, NH , CA, M1, D2, and OS) were known, have NO POTENTIAL TO CARRY THESE RECESSIVE DEFECTS as they are either free by Pedigree or they or their ancestors have been DNA tested free.

Unfortunately there continues to be cattle marketed by less progressive breeders that are Untested “Potential” Carriers.  If you are considering bulls from other breeds and/or breeders we recommend you question their approach to recessive defects. In the case of Registered Angus we highly recommend that you go to www.Angus.org  & put the animals Registration number in the “Animal Search Box” located in the upper left hand corner of the home page. Then watch for this paragraph identifying “Untested Potential Carriers” which will be located at the bottom of their registration paper or online pedigree

“This animal has one or more ancestors known to carry a mutation that can result in calves with a genetic defect known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), or Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), or Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) or Myostatin Double Muscling Strain (M1), or PRKG2 gene mutation for dwarfism (D2) will be added. The American Angus Association recommends DNA testing at an approved laboratory to confirm the absence or presence of the mutation.” If this paragraph is present the cattle have not been tested & should be. If the paragraph is present & they were/are being sold AFTER the recessive was known AND the test available (11/15/08 for AM, 6/12/09 for NH, 10/5/10 for CA, 7/1/11 for M1, & 8/29/11 for D2) the breeder was/is likely trying to hide something. Insist on free by pedigree or DNA test for all your bull needs. —Jeff
